Techno Connectors connecting Melbourne's Sound Tube

Switches Plus were thrilled to be partners in illuminating Melbourne’s Sound Tube delivers a modern transitional portal to the city. City drivers are rewarded with a drive-through experience of both architecture and lighting.

The design incorporates the latest in lighting technology to transform the static structure into a dynamic user experience.

Specific project challenges were linked to the harsh environment, physical installation restraints, the need for consideration of safe and efficient maintenance practices as well as the use of pre-existing centralised control along with other infrastructure assets through a fibre optic backbone.

Switches Plus were engaged in the supply of connectors and control components. The solution includes over 10,000 Techno connectors powering the led lighting elements. In preference to hard wiring, Techno connectors were deemed the best solution. Using connectors allowed for cabling to be done in factory, reduced the installation time and if ever a lighting element need to be changed the repair and disruption time taken is also minimised and importantly, improved safety for repair staff and road users.

Landscaping, irrigation, lighting, pumping, and signage applications are some of the toughest tests for electrical connectors. Often subjected to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, heavy rain, and even full submersion in water or buried underground, the connectors need to perform and protect wiring year-round with no requirement for maintenance or repair.
