Configuring the OTTO HJLG3: Where to Start

The OTTO HJLG3 series is a Hall effect joystick and grip assembly available in six models, with nearly 50 standard faceplate design options, multiple output types and a range of gating configurations. Here's how to work through grip, output and gating selection.

Start with the grip

The HJLG3 series pairs a JHL Hall effect joystick base with one of five G3 series grip options: G3-A, G3-B, G3-C, G3-CK or G3-D.

The first four are Universal Grips, designed to accommodate a range of faceplate configurations. The G3-D is a Control Grip with a different form factor suited to specific control applications.

Grip selection is primarily driven by ergonomics and the operator's hand size. The G3-A is the smallest grip, suited to compact installations or smaller hands. The G3-B is larger. The G3-C and G3-CK are medium-sized options.

If serviceability is a consideration, the HJLG3-C and HJLG3-M models offer field-replaceable grips. The HJLG3-A and HJLG3-B offer field-replaceable faceplates. Worth factoring in early if the machine will need reconfiguration or if the grip is likely to see heavy wear in service.

Choose the faceplate and switch configuration

Once the grip is selected, the faceplate determines which operator controls are available at the grip. The series offers nearly 50 standard faceplate design options, combining pushbuttons, rockers and an optional trigger switch.

The right configuration depends on how many functions the operator needs to access from the grip, and how those controls need to be arranged for natural access during operation. Standard faceplates cover most applications. Custom faceplates are available for more specific requirements.

Select the output type

Output selection is where the HJLG3 connects to the wider machine architecture, so it's worth confirming at the design stage rather than revisiting it later.

The series supports analog (single and redundant), CANopen, CANbus J1939, PWM and USB outputs.

Analog outputs suit simpler or legacy systems. Redundant analog provides a second output signal where a higher level of signal integrity is needed. CANopen and J1939 are digital fieldbus protocols suited to more complex machine architectures. J1939 is widely used in agricultural and construction equipment.

For applications with functional safety requirements, the HJLG3 supports a PLd output option in accordance with ISO 13849-1, Performance Level D, Category 3, with communications across two separate channels.

Confirm the gating

Gating determines how the joystick moves and what physical feedback the operator receives. The HJLG3 series offers nine gating options.

Single axis options restrict movement to one direction, with return to centre or centre detent variants. Dual axis allows movement across two directions. Omnidirectional options allow full movement, with variations including smooth feel, on-axis guided feel, off-axis guided feel and square on-axis guided feel.

The right gating depends on the application and how precisely the operator needs to control the joystick. Guided feel options suit applications where repeatable, accurate positioning matters. Smooth feel suits applications where free movement is preferred over defined channels.

The practical takeaway

Work through the configuration in this order: grip, faceplate, output, gating. Each decision narrows the next one. Confirming the output type early - particularly if PLd is a requirement - avoids having to revisit the specification later in the design process.
