Introducing the OTTO JHLN Joystick: High Performance Control in Compact Operator Environments

Designing control systems for heavy machinery, off highway vehicles and commercial equipment often means working within armrests, control pods and panel layouts that have less available space than full size console areas. The equipment still needs precise, reliable and configurable control hardware, but mounting space can set practical limits on hardware selection.

The new JHLN joystick from OTTO Engineering has been developed for exactly these installation locations. It delivers the same high performance output options as OTTO’s full size JHL joystick in a narrower, bottom mount profile designed specifically for armrest and panel integration.

A single axis joystick built for compact operator environments

The JHLN is a single axis Hall effect joystick designed for equipment that needs proportional or on off control without the footprint of a multi axis or full size unit. Its slimmer design allows engineers to integrate a joystick into armrests, auxiliary control pods and compact panels while maintaining the expected ergonomics and control feel.

The joystick is available with either friction hold or smooth spring return to centre actuation, allowing OEMs to select the control response that best suits the application. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of mechanised functions, including attachments, auxiliary hydraulics, positioning systems and machine directional control.

Multiple outputs that fit different system requirements

The JHLN is available with analogue, redundant analogue, CANOpen, J1939, J1939 with PLd functional safety and PWM outputs. This range allows engineers to choose the output type that aligns with their existing control system or communication protocol.

Handle options that match operator needs

Ergonomics and operator workflow vary between machines, which is why the JHLN is available with five handle configurations. Tall or short handles can be selected with or without a P9 pushbutton on the top of the handle. A multi position TC switch module is available for tall handles and can be supplied with arrow legends or backlighting.

These options give designers the freedom to create control layouts that suit their operators and the specific functions being controlled.

Engineered for harsh operating conditions

Electronics in heavy machinery face moisture, vibration, dust and electrical noise. The JHLN addresses these challenges with electronics sealed to IP6K8S, excellent EMI and RFI immunity and materials that meet RoHS requirements. The result is a joystick designed to perform reliably in demanding environments common to construction, agriculture, mining and material handling equipment.

A compact joystick without compromise

The JHLN provides a joystick option for armrests and compact panel areas where a full size unit would not be suitable. By combining a narrow profile with the same output options and reliability as OTTO’s larger JHL joystick, it offers a practical solution for compact machinery designs that need high performance control in tighter mounting spaces.

Switches Plus Components supplies OTTO Engineering’s control products across Australia and can help teams evaluate which configuration is right for their application.
